Tethered is operated by Pennee Technologies, Inc. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use personal information when you visit our website, join our waitlist, create an account, use matchmaking and date planning, or contact us. In this policy, “Tethered”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to the operator of the service.
1Information we collect
Account and waitlist information. We collect the details you provide, such as your first name, email address, telephone number, date of birth, city, login information and communication preferences. We record your account status, eligibility and consent choices.
Profile and matchmaking information. We collect photos, your answers to onboarding questions, relationship goals, preferences, requirements, information about your experiences and any corrections you make. Answers may be typed or recorded using supported voice features. We process recordings and transcripts where needed to understand your answers and produce your dossier. We also generate information such as profile summaries, compatibility assessments and matching preferences from your interactions with the service.
Some answers may reveal sensitive information, including sexual orientation, religious beliefs, ethnicity, health information or aspects of your sex life. We explain the relevant use and request explicit consent where required. You should avoid including another person's private information in your answers.
Verification information. We process information needed to confirm details you have supplied. Depending on the verification available, this may include identifying details, identity documents, selfies, liveness checks, verification results and records of corrections or reviews. Where a verification process uses biometric information for identification, the applicable notice and consent request will explain that use. Background checks are used to confirm supplied information. Their results are not disclosed to other members.
Matches and dates. We collect your decisions about matches, proposals, scheduling preferences, bookings, selected enhancements, attendance information and date feedback. We also process cancellation, postponement and dispute information.
Safety information. We collect safety contact details you provide, including a contact's name, relationship to you and contact information. We record safety-session activity, check-in responses, help requests, reports and related reviews. Please tell a safety contact that you have provided their details and direct them to this policy. Their details remain private from your match.
Payments and credits. We process order details, amounts, currencies, payment status, transaction references, sponsorships and credit balances. Payment information entered into a payment service is handled through that service. We retain the transaction information needed to administer your purchases and account.
Support and service activity. We collect support correspondence, complaints, appeals and relevant evidence. We also collect technical information such as IP addresses, device and browser information, session activity, notification delivery information and logs needed to operate and protect the service. Cookies and similar technologies may be used as described below.
Where you use a contact-based feature, we process the contact information necessary for that feature and explain the relevant permissions. Mutual contacts are never revealed to other members.
2How we use information
We use information to create and manage accounts, assess age and city eligibility, maintain waitlists, build and update dossiers, assess compatibility, introduce members and coordinate dates. We also use it to confirm supplied details, arrange purchased services, administer payments and credits, provide notifications, operate safety features and answer support requests.
We use relevant records to investigate misconduct, review cancellations and attendance disputes, consider appeals, prevent fraud, protect account security, maintain service reliability and meet legal obligations. We may use service activity and feedback to understand and improve the service. Marketing communications are subject to the choices and consent required by applicable law.
3Our legal grounds
Where data protection law requires a legal basis, we rely on the basis appropriate to the particular purpose:
- Contract: processing necessary to provide the services you request, including account administration, matchmaking, date planning and purchases.
- Legitimate interests: proportionate processing for security, fraud prevention, service administration, misconduct reviews and service improvement, after considering your interests and rights.
- Consent: uses that require your permission, including applicable marketing, optional device permissions and certain tracking technologies.
- Legal obligations: records and disclosures required by law.
- Vital interests or another applicable lawful ground: limited processing necessary in an urgent situation where the legal requirements are met.
For sensitive information, we also need an additional lawful condition. We seek explicit consent where required for matchmaking or verification. Accepting the Terms of Service does not itself provide explicit consent to every sensitive-data use. You may withdraw consent through the relevant control or by contacting us. Withdrawal does not affect earlier lawful processing. A feature may become unavailable if it depends on information we can no longer lawfully use.
4What other members can see
Your first name and shared photo are the only identifying information we disclose to a match. Match-facing dossier content provides the information intended for an introduction without revealing private sensitive information.
We do not reveal your mutual contacts, verification documents, private background-check information, safety contacts or internal safety and enforcement records to other members. Private onboarding answers and recordings are not automatically made available to a match. Any separate sharing feature you choose to use is governed by the information and audience shown for that feature.
Another member may retain information they have already seen. Please report misuse or unauthorised disclosure through Help.
5Who receives information
We share information only for relevant service, safety, legal or business purposes. Recipient categories include:
- Providers of hosting, storage, account authentication and technical support.
- Providers of automated language processing, transcription and other tools used to understand answers, prepare dossiers or support matching.
- Identity and supplied-information verification providers.
- Payment processing and financial administration providers.
- Email, push notification and other communications providers.
- Venues, transport operators and other providers involved in an arrangement you request or purchase.
- Your designated safety contacts, where a feature you activate calls for sharing date or help information with them.
- Authorised staff, contractors and professional advisers who need information for their work.
Each recipient should receive information appropriate to its role. A venue or transport provider may need booking or fulfilment details; it does not need your complete matchmaking history. Access to private information is restricted according to responsibilities.
We may disclose information where required by law or valid legal process, or where lawfully necessary to address fraud, protect a person or establish or defend legal claims. Information may also be transferred as part of a merger, acquisition or business transfer, subject to applicable protections and notice obligations.
6Automated processing and matching
Tethered uses automated tools, including AI where applicable, to interpret answers, prepare profile content and assess compatibility. Outputs can contain mistakes. You can request corrections to your information and contact us about a decision affecting you.
Where a decision is made solely by automated means and has legal or similarly significant effects, we provide the information and safeguards required by applicable law, including human review and an opportunity to challenge the decision where required. Automated matching does not guarantee compatibility or a relationship outcome.
7International processing
Information may be processed in countries outside your country of residence because our operations and service providers may be located internationally. Those countries may have different privacy laws. Where required, we use a lawful transfer mechanism, such as an applicable adequacy decision or approved contractual safeguards, with additional protections where necessary. Contact us for information about destinations and safeguards relevant to your data, or to request a copy subject to lawful redactions.
8How long we keep information
We keep information for as long as necessary for the purpose for which it is processed. The period depends on the type of information, whether your account remains active, an outstanding transaction or dispute, applicable legal requirements and the time reasonably needed to establish or defend claims.
Account and profile information is used while your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove it from active member use and process deletion of information that no longer has a lawful retention purpose. We may retain limited payment, accounting, fraud prevention, safety, enforcement, complaint and legal records where necessary and lawful. Retention must be limited to the relevant purpose. Applicable law may require earlier deletion or permit a longer period for a particular record.
Verification evidence, onboarding recordings and technical logs are subject to the same necessity assessment, taking account of the reason for retaining the original material rather than a result or summary. Residual copies in backups may remain until the relevant backup is replaced or expires, subject to access restrictions and applicable law.
If an underage account is held pending eligibility, the limited age and contact information used for that hold is subject to the same retention principles. A hold does not permit participation in adult matchmaking.
Deleting an account also forfeits unused credits under the Terms of Service, subject to mandatory law. Financial records may remain even though the associated credits can no longer be spent.
9Your choices and rights
Depending on the law that applies, you may request access to your information, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or withdrawal of consent. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests. You may object to direct marketing at any time and unsubscribe using the available controls.
Use account controls where available, or contact us using the details below. We may verify your identity before responding. We respond within the period required by applicable law and explain any lawful restriction or refusal. Your rights may be limited where information must be retained or where disclosure would affect another person's rights.
You may complain to your local data protection authority. This includes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for relevant Nigerian processing and the Information Commissioner's Office for relevant UK processing. You may contact us first, but doing so is not a condition of making a regulatory complaint.
11Security and age restrictions
We use technical and organisational measures intended to protect information, including access restrictions appropriate to the data and service. No online service can guarantee absolute security. We address personal-data incidents and provide notifications where required by law.
Matchmaking is for people aged 18 and over. If you believe a child has accessed adult matchmaking or supplied information improperly, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
12Changes and contact
We may update this policy as the service or legal requirements change. We will update the effective date and provide additional notice of material changes where required. New processing that requires consent will be subject to the relevant consent request.
